A Miss Marple Author Talk, a Historic Observatory, and Free English Classes: Markham & Richmond Hill This Week
The single most notable thing on the Markham/Richmond Hill calendar this week is easy to miss if you're not scanning library programming closely: Lucy Foley, the bestselling British mystery author, appears at the Richmond Hill Public Library to discuss her new Miss Marple novel, set in a Swiss Alpine hotel. Author events at this level of profile don't happen at suburban libraries often, and this one is free.
Just as worth knowing about: the Richmond Hill David Dunlap Observatory runs a free self-guided tour of its Administration Building and Observatory Dome this week, home to Canada's largest optical telescope. It's a national historic site that a lot of GTA residents don't realize is open to the public, and "free" plus "largest telescope in the country" is a combination that deserves more attention than it gets. The observatory also runs paid speaker events regularly, so if the self-guided tour hooks you, there's a next step.
The two library systems carry most of the rest of the week's free programming: Markham Public Library runs an Unionville English Conversation Circle and a session on preparing for a healthcare career aimed at high schoolers, while Richmond Hill Public Library runs Babytime, Family Storytime, and a Chit Chat Socials drop-in aimed at adults looking to make new friends over tea. None of it requires registration or costs anything.
For something with a cover charge, Thirsty Thursday at Menaggio in Markham runs half-price wine and beer specials weekly, and the Richmond Hill Heritage Centre has a standing exhibit, Steeped in History: Tea's Culture, Commerce and Ceremony, tracing tea's global history through real artifacts.
Why this week is worth it: a mystery novelist and a national historic observatory landing in the same week, both free, both easy to miss, is exactly the kind of thing a generic "GTA events" list smooths over. Markham and Richmond Hill's calendar rewards paying attention at the library-and-civic level, not just the concert-listing level.
